Merchandise Manager

This role translates audience knowledge into products that can be made, sold, delivered and reconciled. Work includes surveys, design briefs, rights checks, samples, size quantities, price decisions, stock counts, online listings, show sales, returns and supplier payments.

Product, price, place and promotion must work together. Expand that with landed cost, payment fees, venue commissions where applicable, fulfillment, refunds, sales tax/VAT handling and unsold inventory. Demand for physical products is not proof that a particular artist’s drop will sell.

Ring membership is a category around the Artist, not a documented working relationship, a hierarchy of worth, or a required career sequence.

Work

Tasks

Deliverables

Where it happens: Studios, offices, venues, remote sessions, tours or classrooms depending on the engagement.

Work pattern: Mix of project sprints, sessions, office or remote days, and occasional travel. Irregular hours are common in music; they are not proof of a particular legal status.

Who hires and pays

Employers / clients: Artists and artist businesses; Labels, publishers, promoters, venues, studios, agencies and institutions that actually hire this work; Vendors and public bodies where the function sits inside an organization

Collaborators: The artist or commissioning client; Adjacent specialists named in the briefing; Qualified legal, tax or care professionals when the question exceeds this role

Payment model
Fee, salary, royalty share, commission or a mix — only as the agreement states. Atlas does not publish a universal percentage.
Payer
The hiring artist, production, label, publisher, venue, agency or end client named in the engagement.
Billing unit
Session, day, project, retainer or usage — define exclusions and revisions.
Expenses
Tools, software, travel and unpaid revisions can erase a headline fee. Track them.
Timing
Usage royalties can lag months; session fees should have a date. Do not treat a catalog credit as immediate income.
Scope risks
Payment does not automatically transfer all rights. AI training and derivative reuse need explicit terms.

What is changing

Skills

Family: Audience and marketing

Needed now: Audience research; Spreadsheets; Product specifications; Customer service; Stock control; Supplier communication

Next: Small-batch and preorder testing; Connecting online and show inventory; Asset permissions; Evaluating campaign results

AI, judgment and provenance

May assist: Draft a product description or flag count discrepancies.

Needs a person: A person checks product claims, licensed artwork and actual counts.

Do not: Do not upload unreleased recordings, private contacts, medical data or other people’s identity documents into tools that claim training rights you have not accepted. Do not clone a voice or likeness without documented authority.

QA habit: Keep a provenance note: tool, date, inputs allowed, what a person changed, and who approved. Prompts alone are not a U.S. copyrightability strategy.

Typical workflow and first week

Research → brief and rights check → sample → cost → small drop or preorder → fulfillment → settlement. Do not skip sampling to chase a launch date.

Research a specific audience and build one SKU model.

Portfolio and assessment

Rubric: Brief fit · Technical accuracy · Rights and source hygiene · Clarity of delivery · Honest reflection on limitations — this exercise is not an accredited qualification

How people enter

Example titles: Paid merch seller; E-commerce assistant; Stock or fulfillment coordinator; Artist-service support

Search language: Merchandise Manager; merchandise; manager. Organization types: Artist businesses; Live and recorded-music companies; Institutions and vendors named on this page.

Bounded paid-service idea: A three-SKU costing and preorder plan with a clearly labeled fictional or authorized catalog — not a promise to sell through.

Adjacent careers

7 / 30 / 90 days

7: Research a specific audience and build one SKU model with landed cost.

30: Complete an authorized or clearly simulated drop plan.

90: Use feedback and real or simulated settlement evidence to apply for operational work.

Atlas drafts plans. You send applications, outreach and purchases.

Boundaries and credentials

Hiring often values a portfolio and supervised experience more than a single global certificate. Teaching, driving, food, law, accountancy, medicine and security have local rules — verify them before offering the service.
